About the area

The asterisk on the picture to the left shows you that our camp is between Dan Hole Pond and Little Dan Hole Pond. You will see on the circumferential walk map, that the path to the dam runs parallel to our camp.  We think that we get the best of both lakes.  Each has its different qualities but the big lake is our preference.

Text Box: Interesting geological fact:

Ring Dike Formation

Ossipee is in the Bearcamp-Ossipee River drainage system. There are many lakes and ponds. The mountains are composed of igneous rock. The Ossipee Mountains lie in a circle called a ring dike formation.

Geologists consider the Ossipee Mountains to be one of the finest examples in the world of a ring dike complex. The outer ring is a nearly circular wall of granite ten miles (14 km) in diameter. With nearly a dozen peaks over 2,000 feet, the outer ring embraces an inner pluton, or plug, of similar granite, forming rugged lower hills that include scenic Dan Hole and Conner ponds. The ring dike formed in the Cretaceous period between 100 and 130 million years ago as granite intruded into a much older volcanic magma chamber.

After checking out information on line about this area, we are very interested hiking more of these peaks.  Bald Knob Mt. is in this area, just beside Castle in the Clouds.  We hiked that one last year.   Well worth the hike if your interested!!
